OK, I'll assume this is a real question and, now that it's no longer in the H1 forum, attempt to answer it.

The reason I questioned whether or not this was a serious question is that, in all these years, I've never heard of anything even remotely like this. I am also unable to re-create it. I logged in a test user and sent myself a series of test PMs. I always saw the correct number displayed for the number of new PMs.

I cannot find any problem with the forum.

Dade Murphy = 'Crash Override'
Angelina Jolie = 'Acid Burn'

From the movie hackers. Same place the "Hack the planet" quote comes from

OK, after some consultation I've learned that this is a known fluke in this forum software which has been reported in other places. It is extremely rare, which explains why I've never seen it and was unable to re-create it. It is also self-correcting, I'm told.

So, nothing to worry about.

If this persists, which is highly doubtful, we'll look for some kind of patch to fix it.

No, not a member of anything organized.

That 16 bits is like this:

0101 1111 0011 1111

The left most 0, (it could be a one) gives a net value of 0 or 1 (2^0).
The second bit has a net value of 0 or 2 (2^1), the third bit 0 or 2^2 = 4.
Finally the last bit is 2^15 (32,768) so if there are all toggled high (1's)
you add those individual totals together.

Here's a program.

X=0
for J=0 to 15
X=X+(2^J)
endfor
?X

65,535

I don't know why the HML tossed that, but any geek recognizes that as a 2 ^ <some bit/byte multiple)

There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't...

Cheers
