The main point is that you can't expect Google using the search feature here. It is very basic and has limitations. It can become overloaded. A few users have so many posts that it overwhelms the search feature. It doesn't appear to be designed to handle a very large number of results.

The same thing will happen if you search for a very commonly used word, like "Hummer" or "the". You will not get complete, usable results.

Sorry, but that's just how this forum software is designed. Apparently, the developers of this software decided not to create more then just a very basic search engine.

If you change the URL from 'search_id=194579817' to 'search_author=Gulf1' it will work.

Examples:

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....p;start=15

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....p;start=30

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....p;start=45

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....p;start=60

This is a bad one:

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....p;start=30

In the immortal words of Han Solo, sometimes I impress myself.

I worked around the phpBB limitation as follows:

1. Make sure you are using the Google Chrome Browser. Note: there are likely similar techniques possible with Firefox. Unlikely with IE. No idea about Safari.

2. In Chrome, click the wrench in the top right corner. Click Tools->Extensions. Click "Get more extensions".

3. Type "Link Tweak". Install that extension.

4. Click on "Options" for the Link Tweak extension.

5. Enter in the following (see attached image for clarity):

Rewrite pattern: search_id=\d+
Substitution: search_author=Gulf1
Page url is matched with: .*search_author=Gulf1.*

Redo your search for posts by Gulf1:

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....thor=Gulf1

and you can scroll through any page you like.

----

Rinse and repeat for any username you are having trouble scrolling through all posts for.

So, do you think a mod can be devised to make it do it that way? I'd think it would be a fairly easy edit if the file that handles this could be found. That shouldn't be hard. Then again, this only affects results of searches for 2 or 3 users who have very large post counts.

Yes ;-) See my previous post using Link Tweak. Granted it doesn't scale out nicely because it's a client side mod we'd everyone would have to implement in his or her browser.

BUT, I'm sure we could put in a special-case hack in "search.php" to do some simple URL rewriting in a similar fashion. Or, just change it so ALL searches always go by author--but there must be some reason a "search ID" object is referenced. Perhaps it is a optimization, like a SQL scroll? I noted that search_id changes on every search of the same author, so it's definitely a dynamically created object, it's purpose however is a mystery to me.

Yes, it's entirely possible to screw things up by making changes like that. There's really no reason to change it so all such searches are done that way when so few have such large post counts. Not worth the risk.

Thanks.

Agreed. I suppose we can just recommend people do a client-side URL rewrite by hand, or by extension.

Alternatively, we can create search2.php and experiment with rewriting URLs for the 3 affected people. If you want, feel free to attach search.php to this topic and I can see how clean/easy a hack would be.

This is actually the only time this has ever come up. Who knows if it will ever come up again? The URL rewrite or extension should suffice.

Thanks.

All of the examples you list give the same results i was having. As soon as you click on another page of results you get the error message so although the primary search suffix works initially. Could be the paging file for the next search header is missing from the search string. It shows the number of results of the search which is correct it just unable to search past that point without a re search with parameters. Bummer and as i said only for gulf and nehog. Other high posters are visible.

Green: you have to MANUALLY change the URL each time you click to another "page". Conceptually it's called URL Rewriting. You have to change the URLs from search_id=blah to search_author=Gulf1. My four working links were an illustration of how I manually changed 4 URLs and they worked.

Sorry I wasn't very clear about that.

Now, if you look at my other Link Tweak post, you may notice that I tweaked my own Chrome browser to allow scrolling through ALL of Gulf1's posts. This is a tweak that automates the URL rewriting you would normally have to do by hand.

Does that make any sense?
