The date of the original post under the authors name would be a great addition.
I see that on almost all other phBB forums
Like the above example.
I find it helpful
What do others think?

Hi Damon,

It could be that the older version of PhBB that the HML runs on to allow the mailing list to link to it drives the main page layout. I'm no expert.

However, to answer your question, I do like the layout better when it includes the date of the original post (like the G does as shown in your example).
By including the original post date, it tells you up front that this is an old thread bumped to the top.

How many times have we seen a whole range of advice be re-given on a subject that was originally raised (and closed) in 2007 just because someone bumped the thread by posting in it after doing a forum search on a related subject...

Cheers

I doubt the software for the forum supports such a feature or modification. Regardless this post should have been in the Forum Related Questions forum, not here...

http://www.hummernetworkforums.....um.php?f=7

Sure there are a lot of changes we'd all love, such as the ability to read a multi-page thread in one page instead of having to go through all pages, a preview feature, and so much more. But life handed us this system, which is (AFAIK) the best one for the combined mail list and web forum needs.

It was also posted in the forum questions but since nobody reads there I also posted here To which it would get read and thought about by many and since I've never done a poll I thought I do that but I see many have read and not voted.

Different kinds of forum software do things in different ways. A feature from one cannot just be plugged into another. It just doesn't work that way. In this case, there's an entirely different software architecture involved.

I wish I could do that with web browsers. I wish I could take a feature from Firefox and plug it into Safari or vice-versa, but it just doesn't work that way.

It would be like taking a part from the SAAB and plugging it into the Hummer and expecting it to work. It won't.

It doesn't matter whether or not it's a good idea if it is simply not technically possible.

If you want to know the date of the first post in a thread, all you have to do is click on the topic title in the topic listing. At the very top of the first post is the date and time.

Do you know or has there been effort into looking for more updated forum software that would fit all your requirements?

I am just curious ...

Someone explain to me how a mailing list works? Is this what forums used to be?

Would people mind a change from a Mailing List to a VBulliten? or something even better?

Has this been asked before?

I know i would donate to swap styles of forum?

This is a separate question and has come up many times before.

There is an explanation of what mailing lists are at:

http://www.Humvee.net/lists.html

There are hundreds of die-hard mailing list users on the HML, including some of the HML's best contributors and very long-time members. I have steadfastly refused to abandon them.

Even though there are still many of them in existence, mailing lists are generally considered "dinosaurs", so further software development is not taking place.

Mailing list integration with the forum is accomplished through add-on software. The developers of that software started on a new version to be compatible with newer forum software about 3 years ago, but never completed it.

That add-on software which accomplishes the mailing list integration with the forum is another case of having been designed for a particular software environment and architecture. I cannot take that add-on from this forum and plug it into some other forum software. It just won't work.

While I may have been slow to comment, I highly value the mailing list. Although not a high contributor, I have been a member for about 11 yrs.

In fact the mailing list is the only way I keep in touch with the Hummer community. I only use the web version to post.

Without going into lots of detail, the mailing list works far better for me for the way I like to keep up to date with the goings on.

So, THANK YOU BOB, for keeping the mailing list!

Joe

I've noticed that the H1 forum has been on again off-again really slow for months now. Seems randomly affected throught the day and some days worse than others. I know it's the forum because i can get on marketplace very quickly or anyother forum/website. Seems to only affect the H1 forum. I'm assuming this is due to the software (I'm assuming it's not a hardware issue)? Do you think it's possible to gather enough contributions to get someone to complete that add-on software mentioned above and revamp the HML/H1 forum? I doubt anyone wants to lose the Mailing list once they understand that's where a lot of the older/wiser members post from, I certainly don't. But eventually (maybe not this year or next but maybe in the next 5 or 10) the forum software will need to be upgraded. Plus the H1 forum should be running the latest and greatest right?! Very Happy I think there are a lot of people on the forum that would be willing to donate a good amount of money to get something made, I would. Course any post or poll to ask that question would have to be located in the H1 forum where people actually read. Almost no one reads outside of it. (i think)

I am fully and painfully aware of all this and have been working on it. An upgrade is now technically possible, but it is much, much easier said than done. A team, with the necessary expertise, has been assembled and things got to the point of a test forum being set up, but people get busy and side-tracked and progress has stalled. I'm doing everything I can.

Woohoo! I hope my comments don't sound like complaints. I love this forum and me and everyone else appreciates it and all the hard work and time you've put into it for the good of the Hummer community immensely. If there's anything else we can do to help support just ask. Very Happy
