Our users have posted a total of 379543 articles
We have 6154 registered forum users plus about 1,000 mailing list users
3915 have never posted

So how can you really determine how many actual real members there are?

You can't... Just as simple as that. More than a few of us have two or more IDs on the HML for various reasons, and that alone would create such problems as double counting, and hung chads.

Were one to want to estimate how many 'active' members there are, just count posts for the last 90 days. As far as lurkers go, it is nice that they are reading but they are not active.

I would add something to what Peter said: A forum is not like a mailing list. There is no unsubscribing from a forum. If someone loses interest, they merely cease to visit the forum. They are not removed, they do not remove themselves. The number of registered users keeps increasing, as none are ever take off the total. All web forums work this way.

There has always been a large lurker element. I'd guesstimate that between 10 and 20% of those who sign up ever post anything. That's been the case since the beginning of the HML, and is generally the case with any mailing list or forum. There's nothing unusual about this one.

My question is: Why does it matter?

I think it would be nice to know how many people that actually own any of the 11,800 Hummers made are ever involved in this forum. Never seems like much more than the 50 or so who regularly communicate here and maybe a hundred others that rarely do so. I'm sure there are much more since the mailing list alone is about a thousand, but seems there will never be a better defined answer.

What if those of us that are "regulars" are also the only ones having problems with our trucks? Maybe we are the one's with "lemons" and all the "silent" users and subscribers are all laughing at us and our daily struggles! Laughing

Just while trying to look up a member I had to go thru page after page after page to find them.
Wish it was easier to find somebody in the members area.
So while playing around in there I came across all of the no posters

So to answer the question it does not matter was just an observation

This question comes up every so often. There is no way to know. Requiring a VIN for people to sign up, as has been suggested in the past, would not be well received and would turn people away, plus the HML has never excluded non-owners. It's always been open to enthusiasts and prospective owners. It's very beneficial to the latter because they can ask questions and get answers. You see it all the time. In fact, this is why I started the HML in the first place. While our truck was being built, I had questions.

The HML will continue to be a valuable resource for owners and non-owners alike.

I think a poll was once done, but that relied on voluntary participation. It wasn't very accurate.

The member list can easily be sorted by any of several criteria, and the results can be displayed in ascending or descending order. You can also skip pages using the "GoTo" feature to zero in on the member you're looking for.
